Michael looked good at 'Dega

Posted on: April 29, 2008 9:11 am

Man it was a disappointing race at Taladega this week,  My man Mikey had the car to win but blew up coming to the white flag.  Mikey moved to the lead with the a great push from JJ.  Right after they got in the lead a yellow came out and Kyle Bush had Mikey in his sites and with a push from JPM they were able to pass Mikey.  Mikey fell back to around 10th and was looking for help when he saw JJ and Jeff moving up on the outside.  Mikey pulled in front of those two and JJ and Mikey were starting to pull away from everyone else and moving fast to the front when boom Mikey''s engine quit.  Well so much for the win but thank goodness Dale Junior decided to slam into the 26 and cause the really big one about the same time and Mikey was able to limp back to the start finish line and end up in 27th instead of 30th, that is 9 more points.

MWR as a whole did ok,  Mike McDonald did very well on the plate track and was on his way for a top 20 finish when he got squeezed and spun out and David was caught up in the white flag melee.  But David finished 20th and McDonald finished 26th.

With the 96 and the 22 missing this race this really gave David some breathing room away from the go or go homers.  It was brought up on a thread is it now time for MWR to do something.  All I can say is I hope their luck has changed.  David has been running in the top 20 for most of the year but something seems to happen that drops him back into the pack before the race is over and he gets a poor finish.  Mikey hasn't been running real well but he is doing better with Bobby Kennedy as the crew chief.  At least Bobby isn't afraid to tell Mikey No during the race when Mikey decides he needs or wants something done to the car. Bobby isn't intimidated by Mikey and he's not afraid to lose his job.

I am predicting that Mikey and MWR will start to move up in the standing starting this week at Richmond, Look for Mikey to finish in the top 15 this week and David a solid top 20.  The 44 will be in the top 25 as Mike showed he can handle the short tracks when he was at Martinsville.

Until next week.

Mikey, I did'nt realize his motor failed. I was out callin turkies for a cousin so I missed most well almost all of the race . I thought he got tangled up in someone elses junk. To bad cuz I had him on 3 fantasy rosters ,and naturally I dropped Vickers so I took it hard this week. I will admit MWR is making some good progress tho.

"Mike McDonald" is now driving for MWR?  Can you get Doobie Brothers concert T-shirts at his souvenier trailer?

I feel like you Mikeyfan, what a letdown to go from a fighting for a win to a 27th place finish in about 3 laps.  On the Monday night show on Speed Mikey said that he assumed the McDowell got into the remnants of his #55 engine blowup and caused the spin that took the 00 out of a good finish,  Amazing how bad luck can just stick to this team.   I didn't expect Mikey to hold on to the lead but I thought he could at least hang with the lead pack and get a top 7 or 8 finish, which would be huge for them.  I think NASCAR should also award points during the race as well as at the end like at the 1/3  and 2/3 mark so that if a team has a really good day and then bad luck strikes at the end they don't get slammed in points like they had just sucked the whole race.  I know that it 's where you are in the end that counts so they could weigh the finish position much more heavily than the in race positions.

Looks like Reuti is bringing the 44 team around a little after two awful finishes in his first two races since the switch,  I think he''s clearly the best driver at MWR.  He was averaging 92 points a race in the 00, since going to the 44 those two bad finishes have him down to 74.5 points per race in the 44, thats about 1 point per race better than Jarrett was doing in his five races.  If he could have stayed in the 00 and continued his average then the 00 team would have about 75 more points than it does now and that would put them in the mid 20's in owner points.  David is averaging nearly 85 points a race overall  while Mikey is at 78.6 and McDowell is at 73.75 (not bad considering his lack of experience).

Rules ? for you Mikeyfan.  When the Yellow goes out and the field is frozen, are they frozen in midwreck since the yellow is usually out before the wreck is actually over, especially at Dega and Daytona.  Like when McDowell spun out late in the race, IF that had brought out a caution would he still hold on to his spot since no other cars passed him (I don't think they did) before the yellow came out or would the other cars that  pass him as he ends his slide and gets his car going and back on the track gain that position.  I think that if a car is involved in bringing out a caution all other cars not involved in it on that lap shoud get to pass them (unless the wreck brings the car across the finish line at the checker, then he gets to keep that spot).

Anyway, time to finish this rant.  I'm not too optimistic about the next several races, seems like everything falls into the same order on the non restrictor plate races so I feel the best I can hope for for Mikey's teams this week is maybe a top 15 and maybe all three within the top 25.  Man I really look foward to Talladega and Daytona, too bad it's only four races out of 30 something.   With the great finishes we get at the plate races I wonder why when all these new 1.5 mile tracks were being built why someone didn't build another 2.5 high banked track.  Wonder if a new one was built in the near future if NASCAR would somehow find a way to give it a race?  I would think so considering the TV ratings and their history of exciting races.  OK, thats all.  GO MWR, Keep your car on the track and prey on the attrition of others and don't race the leaders when you are laps down in the final laps and get a tire cut down as a result which cost you a top 20 finish!.

About NASCAR UPDATES
I will usually be posting about MWR and focusing on Michael Waltrip. However, when breaking news happens then I may switch gears and express my feelings on a different subject.
